Scotia
As a rule, most popular traditional harps in Scotland are about 48" or less in height and are strung in gut. The Scotia has a medium string tension, also known as 'lever' or 'folk' tension. It offers a unique 'even' string spacing that enhances the playing of traditional music, the dance tunes of which can be quite fast and intricately ornamented. The Scotia can be supplied in 'lever/folk gut' if that is desired.
Adequate tone and volume are always a concern on smaller harps, and I've developed these models to produce a tone that is sparkly clear in the treble and warm & bass-y in the lower registers, with adequate volume overall enabling the harp to be heard. This harp has been specially designed to produce the highest tonal quality, as demanded by descriminating players.
Background: After returning from a trip to Scotland to attend the Edinburgh Harp Festival in 1993 I was inspired to create a 34-string, medium-tensioned nylon-strung harp I originally called the 'Sun, Moon and Stars'. When Scottish harper William Jackson approached me in 2005 about building a custom harp for him along the lines of what he was used to in Scotland, I came up with the Scotia model, which was based on the Sun, Moon & Stars, but featured the use of Savarez 'carbon' strings, Camac precision levers, and traditional string spacing.
