Wood Finishes

Hand Rubbed Finish

I'm currently offering a modern, durable, hand-rubbed finish that brings out the beauty of the wood while offering superior protection. The process starts with two coats of sealer, which is 'scuff sanded' to remove specs and raised grain. If the wood is an open-grain wood such as walnut, a grain filler is then used to fill the pores of the wood. After that dries, I spray on up to 9 coats of Hybrivar, a waterborne urethane made by Target Coatings.

Once the finish has cured for three days, I wet sand with #600 sandpaper and then burnish with 0000 steel wool. A final rub with a terrycloth towel gives a satin sheen to the finish. I also usually apply a wax top coat such as 'The Original Bee's Wax Furniture Polish' .

The finish I offer provides a professional, hard, optically clear and pore-filled finish that will rival any other harp finish out there today. Open-pore woods such as koa, oak and walnut require a grain filler, that also acts as a bit of a stain. These are hard finishes, and suitable for the hard-wearing that harps often get.
